BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Drivers in the Lehigh Valley are noticing a welcome sight at the pump: gasoline prices dipping below $3 per gallon at select stations.

GasBuddy data shows stations such as the Gulf & Raceway on Stefko Boulevard ($2.95) and U.S. Gas on Catasauqua Road ($2.99) in Bethlehem offer prices under $3.

These prices mark the lowest gas prices the area has seen in three years since 2021.

Despite these lower prices at a few locations, the average gas price in the area remains above $3.

Allentown’s gas price statistics on GasBuddy show a lowest price of $2.87 and an average of $3.25 per gallon.

The decrease has sparked conversations among residents on Facebook. Some speculate that the drop is connected to the upcoming elections. “Right before the election! Watch them rise after,” commented a local driver. Another added, “Just in time for the election! How nice of them.”

However, energy experts emphasize that gasoline prices are primarily influenced by economic factors such as supply and demand, inflation, and seasonal trends—not electoral cycles.

Patrick DeHaan, an analyst with GasBuddy, explained that people tend to drive less during the fall and winter months, leading to decreased demand and lower prices.

“As goes the economy, so go gas prices,” DeHaan said. “A slower economy leads to lower prices, while a stronger economy can result in higher prices.”

The trend is similar nationally. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. has fallen to $3.22, 19 cents less than a month ago and 66 cents less than a year ago.

While the lower prices offer temporary relief, experts caution that they may not last indefinitely. “We expect gas prices to remain low through fall and winter,” DeHaan noted. “But prices may rise again in the spring as more Americans hit the road.”

For now, drivers in the Lehigh Valley can take advantage of the lower prices at stations like the Gulf and U.S. Gas in Bethlehem but should remain mindful of the ever-changing factors that influence fuel costs.
