OREFIELD, Pa. — A beloved Lehigh Valley landmark has earned international recognition.
Shankweiler’s Drive‑In Theatre was recently named to Variety Magazine’s prestigious list of “The 21 Coolest Movie Theaters in the World.”
The honor comes as no surprise to generations of local moviegoers who have enjoyed summer nights under the stars at America’s oldest operating drive‑in theater.
Established in 1934, Shankweiler’s has weathered changing entertainment landscapes for over nine decades while maintaining its unique charm and nostalgic appeal.
Current owners Lauren McChesney and Matt McClanahan, who acquired the historic venue in 2022, have breathed new life into the cultural institution while preserving its rich heritage.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to preserve and elevate such a historic theater,” says Lauren. “Shankweiler’s was the second drive‑in ever built and, for most of its life, has been the oldest operating drive‑in theater in the world, even holding a Guinness World Record!”
The recognition from Variety comes as Shankweiler’s prepares for another exciting summer season.
While the drive‑in operates year‑round, the summer months represent their peak period, with a lineup of blockbuster films that appeal to audiences of all ages.
“I’m most excited about the new Jurassic World,” Lauren shares. “I love the whole Jurassic Park franchise, and they’re always so much fun to watch at a drive‑in.”
Meanwhile, her co‑owner Matt is looking forward to screening Disney’s live‑action Lilo & Stitch over Memorial Day weekend, which traditionally kicks off their busiest stretch.
The Memorial Day screening will feature special vendors and activities. “We work hard to create a whole experience, not just with the movie but also with snack bar items, decorations, photo ops, and outside vendors,” Lauren explains. “The drive‑in is a special place, and we want to make sure every visit is memorable.”
Summer 2025 promises an impressive slate of family‑friendly blockbusters, including How to Train Your Dragon, Freakier Friday, and many more.
Despite competition from streaming services and indoor multiplexes, Lauren and Matt remain confident in the enduring appeal of drive‑in theaters.
“There’s something very special about seeing a movie on a giant screen, surrounded by real people who are experiencing the film together,” Lauren notes.
“Whether you go to the movie alone or with a group, everyone in that theater will laugh or cry together, and it’s something that can’t be replicated at home.”
For the owners, the most rewarding aspect of operating this historic venue is witnessing the joy it brings to patrons of all ages.
“The daily excitement that we get from customers reliving a beloved childhood experience, or from people who are experiencing the drive‑in for the very first time!” Lauren enthused.
As Shankweiler’s basks in international recognition from Variety Magazine, its owners remain focused on the future while honoring the past.
With nearly a century of history behind it and a summer season filled with promising films ahead, this Lehigh Valley treasure continues to demonstrate why the drive‑in experience remains relevant, vibrant, and worthy of global acclaim.
“We hope to continue showing movies under the stars for a long, long time!” Lauren says.
