The department gave the explanation Thursday, answering questions Lehigh Daily sent after reporting on the errors Oct. 5. Also Thursday, PennDOT reported another outage of its online services, the second it has confirmed in 10 days. Its answer does not say how many drivers were affected or what those whose registrations have expired should do.

More than a dozen people reported the same or similar errors in a thread on the r/Pennsylvania forum that began Sept. 29, when a driver whose registration expired the next day reported a "Data Validation Error" in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and on a phone. A screenshot the poster shared reads, "The payment page cannot be loaded at this time."
