BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Demolition has begun at Friendship Park in Bethlehem, marking the start of its long-planned transformation into a revitalized community space.
Construction crews are currently removing outdated fixtures and aging asphalt. The park will be closed to the public for the duration of this construction, which is expected to conclude mid-September.
Project origins
The park was identified for investments due to deteriorating conditions, aging recreation equipment, lack of relevant recreational opportunities, inequities across age groups, and severe underutilization.
Community Action Development Corp. of Bethlehem partnered with Baltimore-based Mahan Rykiel Associates Inc. in 2022 to lead a community-driven redesign process.
More than 100 residents contributed feedback to shape the new vision.
The city of Bethlehem hired Herbert, Rowland and Grubic Inc. in 2023 to develop construction and engineering plans and secured the necessary permits.
The city successfully raised the $1.4 million estimated to fund the project in 2024, ensuring the community’s vision could become reality.
What’s ahead
Celina Daddario, Northside Alive neighborhood coordinator, said feedback from community members inspired the reimagining of Friendship Park.
“The new Friendship Park plan was developed in concert with the community at several summer events,” Daddario said. “Over 100 people offered their reactions to the Friendship Park Redesign. We learned how our community currently uses the park, how it can be improved, and what they wanted to see in the new design.”
Upgrades will include more green space, native trees for shade and upgraded swings, paths, entrances and safety surfaces to improve accessibility.
The project will also create a new basketball court with single rims and a free splash pad to help children cool off in the summer.
Daddario said many community members’ ideas made it into the final design.
“This project is set to create a vibrant space for our community, fostering connection and enjoyment.”
