BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A former Bethlehem police officer who resigned to appear on Love Island USA, drawing criticism from city officials who said his departure worsened staffing shortages, was dumped from the reality dating show six days into the season.

Sean Reifel, 29, of Easton, was the first contestant eliminated from Season 8 of the Peacock dating series after he was left single during the season’s first recoupling ceremony. On Love Island, contestants, known as Islanders, must remain coupled to stay in the villa; those left single after recouplings can be eliminated, or “dumped.”

The episode turned a local personnel controversy into a reality-TV storyline: A newly hired officer left a short-staffed city police department to take part in a televised search for romance, then left the show before the first week ended.

But Reifel’s brief run also drew sympathy from viewers, many of whom said online that he seemed genuine and deserved more time after the recoupling left him without a partner. His fellow Islanders also reacted emotionally to his departure, describing him as kind, supportive, and someone they would miss in the villa.

Reifel could not be reached for comment. His Instagram direct messages were closed.

Reifel joined the Bethlehem Police Department in August 2025 after previously working as a sheriff’s deputy in Contra Costa County, California. His last day with the department was May 20, shortly before Love Island USA premiered on June 2.

Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds publicly criticized the decision, saying the city had invested time and taxpayer money into training Reifel and was left with another vacancy in a department already struggling to hire.

“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” Reynolds told local news outlets. “We are disappointed he left, as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year.”

Reynolds added, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”

Police Chief Michelle Kott also expressed disappointment, saying the department was already facing vacancies and staffing strain. Department policy barred active officers from participating in reality television, meaning Reifel could not remain on the force while appearing on the show.

Reifel’s family defended him on social media after the criticism, saying officials missed an opportunity to highlight a police officer in a positive light and disputing parts of the criticism regarding his training. His mother said he had already completed police academy training before joining Bethlehem and had initially sought a leave of absence.

On Love Island USA, Reifel entered as an original Islander and was initially coupled with Beatriz Hatz, a 25-year-old Paralympic athlete from Colorado. Their pairing weakened after Hatz formed a connection with bombshell Gabriel Vasconcelos.

By Episode 5, Reifel was exploring potential connections with Kenzie Annis and Trinity Tatum. Annis said Reifel made her feel protected and cared for, noting that at one point, Reifel made her eggs in the shape of a heart.

But Corbin Mims, the newest bombshell, was given the first choice at the recoupling and chose Annis. That left Reifel’s fate in the hands of Tatum, who had also spoken with him but ultimately chose to remain with Bryce Dettloff.

Reifel was left single and was dumped from the villa.

“Honestly, just thank you,” Reifel told the other Islanders before leaving. “It was a cool experience, like once in a lifetime thing. And I really enjoyed getting to know all of you.”

His exit drew emotional reactions from the cast. Several Islanders described him as genuine, kind, and supportive. One said losing him felt like “losing a family member,” while another called him “a brother.”

Reifel’s sister, Brice Marie, posted an emotional TikTok after the episode aired, saying the family had been told earlier that day he would be leaving, but she still cried while watching it.

“It just shows how much of a genuine, kind person Sean is,” she said, adding that the show may not have been the right environment for a mature single father in his late 20s.

@briceymarie Thank you all for all of the supportive and kind messages about Sean. I can’t wait for him to see them when he gets home. ❤️ Follow Sean on socials: ✨Instagram: parm3_sean ✨TikTok: seanathan96 #LoveIsland #loveislandusa #seanloveisland #peacock #loveislandseason8 @Love Island USA @Peacock ♬ original sound – Brice Marie

Reifel referenced fatherhood during his time on the show, and his status as a single father became part of the viewer conversation about his brief stay. Before leaving, he said he hoped his appearance showed his son the value of taking a chance.

“I think it’s important to show my son that it’s cool to try and put yourself out there,” Reifel said. “I think part of life is just taking that chance even though you know it might not work out.”

Less than a year after Reifel was sworn in as a Bethlehem police officer, the department was down another member. Less than a week after he entered the villa, Reifel was out too.
