LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. — Giant shoppers can get 10% off an in-store grocery bill, up to $10, through Thursday while the chain’s website and app stay offline after a cybersecurity incident at its parent company.
“While we get back up and running, we’re happy to offer 10% off your in-store purchase, up to $10,” the Carlisle-based chain said in a video it posted on Facebook Friday. The video tells shoppers to ask the cashier to apply the discount at checkout.
Giant has since added a note to the top of its Facebook post for shoppers who paid before they saw the offer: “If you shopped before seeing this offer, please visit your store’s Customer Service desk and our team will be happy to make it right.”
Because the savings stop at $10, the full 10% applies only to bills up to $100. A $150 order still saves $10, which is about 6.7%.
In a statement to news outlets, Giant said customers will receive the offer by email instead of the weekly promotional email, limited to one redemption per household. “Customers must mention the email offer to the cashier, and scan cards have been distributed to stores to make the discount process simple at checkout,” Giant said.
In a reply under its post Saturday, Giant said its Customer Care team will help with questions about accounts, rewards or points “once our systems are back up and running.”
Giant’s website still showed an outage notice Saturday saying the site and app “are currently unavailable.” It directs online shoppers to DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats and says stores, pharmacies, and fuel stations remain open during normal business hours. Giant’s store locator listed 15 stores in Lehigh and Northampton counties this week.
This week, customers can also use digital coupons without the app. Giant said in a Friday Facebook post that it applies every digital coupon in its Oct. 16-22 weekly ad automatically with a store card. “No action needed,” the post says.
Cardholders can still earn points by entering a phone number or scanning a card at checkout, and can redeem them for eligible gas discounts at the pump, Giant said in its statement.
Martin’s grocery stores posted the same 10% offer.
Parent company Ahold Delhaize said Monday that it had a cybersecurity issue in its network and took some systems offline to protect them. In its latest update, revised Wednesday, the company said it was starting to bring some systems back in a controlled way.
“Although our investigation is still ongoing, we have no evidence at this moment that customer, associate and partner data was taken in this cybersecurity incident,” Ahold Delhaize said.
As of Saturday, the company’s newsroom has not posted any new updates, and neither Giant nor Ahold Delhaize has given a date for when the website and app will return.
