Knife-wielding woman shot by police in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan and Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca announced an ongoing investigation into a non-fatal, officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at the former Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital.

Police and emergency services were called to the vacant facility at 850 S. Fifth St. to assist a woman who appeared to be in distress, according to authorities. When first responders approached, the woman brandished a knife and threatened them, police said. An officer then fired one shot, striking the woman.

The woman received immediate emergency care at the scene and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Authorities emphasized that reports indicating the shooting was fatal are incorrect.

Officials said the woman was neither a patient nor a resident of Good Shepherd, and the facility is no longer in operation. The incident did not involve any Good Shepherd patients, residents or employees.

The shooting is being investigated jointly by the Allentown Police Department and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities said the incident was isolated, was not an active shooter event and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
