Lehigh Valley’s own Saquon Barkley lands on ‘Madden 26’ cover, cooks up at Geno’s
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley will grace the cover of Madden NFL 26, Electronic Arts announced Monday, making the Philadelphia Eagles running back just the second Eagles player ever to earn the honor.
For the Lehigh Valley, it’s another milestone moment for the region’s favorite son. Barkley moved to the Lehigh Valley in 2001 when his family relocated to Bethlehem, later moving to Allentown and finally settling in Coplay in 2005.
He attended Whitehall High School, where his athletic prowess first caught national attention.
The Madden NFL video game series, produced annually by EA Sports since 1988, is one of the most popular sports video games in the world.
Named after legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden, the game simulates professional football and has become a cultural phenomenon, with its cover athlete selection considered one of the highest honors in the sport.
“I’m grateful to my teammates, coaches, and Eagles fans for their support, and I can’t wait to hit the field again to give Madden players more highlight-reel moments in Madden NFL 26,” Barkley said in a statement.
The cover features Barkley performing his now-iconic reverse hurdle that became a defining moment of the Eagles’ championship season.
Barkley also joins an exclusive group as the first Eagles offensive player to earn a 99 overall rating in the game, joining kicker David Akers and safety Brian Dawkins as the only Eagles players to achieve the honor.
Barkley is the first Eagles player featured on a Madden cover since quarterback Donovan McNabb appeared on Madden 06, 20 years ago.
The announcement comes months after Barkley’s triumphant return home following the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory. Barkley visited the Lehigh Valley for an honorary celebration at the PPL Center in downtown Allentown in March.
Win or lose, Barkley is viewed as a champion in his hometown of Whitehall and throughout the Lehigh Valley. The Eagles star has said being gracious, humble and kind comes from his parents and he always wants to represent the Lehigh Valley well.
The honor extends beyond just the video game world. The Whitehall-Coplay School District plans to induct Barkley into its Hall of Fame for his achievements later this year, cementing his legacy in the community where his professional journey began.
Throwing it down at Geno’s Steaks in Philly

Philadelphia celebrated the announcement in typical fashion, with Geno’s Steaks in South Philly transforming into “Steakquon’s” just hours later, featuring larger-than-life images of Barkley’s Madden 26 cover on full display and even showing Barkley leaping over the restaurant’s famous cheesesteak roof topper.
Barkley appeared at the famous cheesesteak shop to man the grill for a time and take some selfies with excited Eagles fans.
The game’s cover athlete selection has historically been seen as both an honor and a potential curse, with some players experiencing injury or poor performance the following season.
However, coming off a Super Bowl championship and record-setting season, Barkley appears unfazed by such superstitions and eager to get back on the field.
As the Lehigh Valley continues to celebrate its connection to one of the NFL’s brightest stars today, Barkley’s Madden cover serves as the latest chapter in a remarkable journey that began on the fields of Whitehall High School and has now reached the pinnacle of professional sports recognition.
Madden NFL 26 is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2025.
