A man is in critical condition following a drowning incident Wednesday afternoon at Jordan Park in Allentown.
The Allentown Fire Department responded to emergency calls at approximately 1:22 p.m., reporting that a man had jumped into the water and failed to resurface. According to officials, bystanders attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful.
“Upon arrival, firefighters immediately entered the water to rescue the person who was found underwater,” Allentown city communications manager Genesis Ortega said in a news release. “He was removed from the water, and CPR was initiated while Allentown paramedics administered advanced life support at the scene.”
The man was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, where he remains in critical condition. His identity has not been released.
The incident has drawn attention to the city’s limited supervised swimming options. Resident day passes at municipal pools range from $2 to $6, and season passes cost $75 for individuals or $200 for families.
Meanwhile, the Jordan Park pool has been closed for at least three years, prompting some residents to use unguarded natural waterways.
Anyone with questions about the incident should contact the fire department’s public affairs officer, Captain Jon Hammel, at 610-437-7765 or jon.hammel@allentownpa.gov.
