ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are skating into the new season with a refreshed look both on and off the ice.

The PPL Center recently received a major technology upgrade, highlighted by a new high-definition video board that’s nearly 30% larger and twice as clear as its predecessor, according to media coordinator Connor Lawrence.

The “edgeless” LED board, installed over the summer, replaces the arena’s original 2014 display and is accompanied by new fascia boards wrapping around the rink. Lawrence said the improvements are designed to enhance fan engagement through upgraded graphics, in-game stats and light shows.

“The clarity is incredible — it’s really a game-changer for the fan experience,” Lawrence said. “We also debuted a pregame light show on opening night where fans could join in through a QR code, and it was a huge success.”

The PPL Center’s upgrades extend beyond the arena bowl. A new outdoor marquee video board was added at the corner of Seventh and Hamilton streets, outside the WFMZ gate, allowing passersby to catch team highlights and event updates.

The new boards were installed by a Dallas-based company that also works with several NHL arenas, bringing the Phantoms’ in-game technology on par with major-league venues.

Fans will also notice a few off-ice upgrades this season. The Phantoms’ fan shop now carries new merchandise from premium brands including TravisMathew, 47 Brand, Peter Millar and Vineyard Vines. Pepsi has joined as the arena’s new beverage partner, and concession stands have added several new food and drink options.

On the ice, the Phantoms begin the season under new leadership with head coach John Snowden, who previously served as assistant coach before being promoted in July. Snowden said he’s focused on building team chemistry and integrating a faster, more possession-based style of play.

“We’ve added a lot of young talent and skill to the roster,” Snowden said. “It’s going to take time to figure out our structure and rhythm, but once we’re on the same page, fans are going to see some really exciting hockey.”

Snowden highlighted several young players to watch, including forward Denver Barkey, who he described as a high-IQ, 200-foot player; winger Alex Bump, who brings scoring and playmaking ability; and goaltender Carson Bjarnason, who Snowden said made an impressive first start against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

The Phantoms will continue their popular community events this season, including the annual Teddy Bear Toss, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 20. Last year’s event set a new team record with 11,853 teddy bears donated to Valley Youth House, surpassing the previous year’s total of 10,869.

“It’s one of our favorite traditions,” Lawrence said. “The players personally deliver the teddy bears to Valley Youth House, and it really captures what this team and this community are all about.”

The Phantoms return to the PPL Center ice at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, as they continue their early-season homestand.
