CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The local township’s Environmental Council gathered inside its office from 6 to 7 p.m. on July 22 to discuss the area’s ongoing environmental-related developments as part of its free public monthly meetings.

The meeting was attended by Chairman Thomas L. Gettings, Staff Liaison Patrick Leonard, Planning Commission Representative to the EAC Diana Inglis, Community Development Clerk Dawn Latchum, member Jeff Crone, and member Christine Emily Gorigoitia-Wittenberg. Vice Chairman Robert Uhl, Jr., did not.

The EAC reviewed the Township’s plans to renovate the 10-acre formerly private Moyer’s Lake into a public park, complete with walking trails. The lake has been closed since the Township acquired it last summer for renovations.

A public meeting took place on July 23 at the Township Building at 6 p.m., featuring additional information on the Lake’s renovations.

Leonard explained what the lake currently looks like.

“It looks like you can walk across the lake now,” Leonard said.

Leonard also explained that excessive algae and invasive water chestnuts plague the Lake, and he proposed a solution to the issue.

Leonard met with a company the week before the meeting that specializes in aquatic herbicide treatment. The treatment will control the invasive plant population without harming the local wildlife.

Invasive Chinese Mystery Snails are also common at the Lake and range in size. The EAC believes that a decline in invasive plants will also lead to a decrease in the snail population. They will prepare future funds for another solution to the invasive snails if the issue persists.

Leonard estimated that it will take 3-5 years to complete the Lake on a budget of $4-4.5 million.
