ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Voters in Allentown and across Lehigh County will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 4, to decide a range of municipal and county offices. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. statewide.
Mayor of Allentown
Matthew Tuerk (D) is the incumbent, seeking re-election for a second term.
Challenging him is Ed Zucal (R), a city councilman and former police sergeant, in a rematch of the May primary.
Tuerk has framed his campaign on growth and economic development.
“Our city has a rich history and the regional economy is strong,” Tuerk said on his campaign website. “Let’s continue to move toward an Allentown that is truly open for business, creating jobs and bringing prosperity to every corner of a safe, clean and healthy city.”
Zucal’s campaign focuses on quality-of-life issues.
“My plan is to attack all forms of quality-of-life issues that are impacting Allentown residents,” Zucal said.
Lehigh County executive
The office of county executive in Lehigh County is also on the ballot.
Joshua Siegel (D), a state representative, is the Democratic nominee.
“I’m running because we need a new generation of leadership,” Siegel said in an October debate. “We need leaders who act boldly and decisively and govern with a sense of urgency for the challenges people face in their daily lives.”
Roger MacLean (R), former Allentown City Council member and former Allentown police chief, is the Republican nominee.
“My goal when I lead as county executive is to make sure Lehigh County is a better place than when I walked in,” MacLean said. “That’s my goal in every role. In my tenure as police chief, major crimes fell 27%. I’m very proud of what we accomplished.”
The county executive oversees about 2,200 employees who manage daily county operations.
Lehigh County commissioner
The election for Lehigh County commissioner will fill five district seats. Candidates include:
- Antonio Pineda (R) — incumbent representing District 1
- Ron W. Beitler (D) — incumbent representing District 2
- Zachary Cole-Borghi (D) — incumbent representing District 3
- Jacqueline Rivera (R) — Bethlehem resident running for District 3
- Geoffrey Brace (D) — incumbent representing District 4
- Patrick Leonard (R) — former Upper Saucon Township supervisor running for District 5
- Sarah Fevig (D) — assistant vice provost in higher education, running for District 5
Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas
Candidates for the county Court of Common Pleas include:
- Mark Stanziola (D) — local attorney
- Patricia Fuentes Mulqueen (R) — local prosecutor
What’s at stake
Key issues expected to drive voter interest include housing, budgeting and the open county executive seat, which gives both parties a chance to shape the region’s future direction.
Municipal elections often see lower turnout, but even small shifts in participation can affect the outcome of competitive races.
Voters across Pennsylvania will also decide whether to retain several statewide judges on the Supreme Court, Superior Court and Commonwealth Court. In these retention elections, voters will vote “Yes” or “No,” and judges must receive a majority of “Yes” votes to keep their seats. These races can affect how Pennsylvania courts handle major issues, including election law and state policy.
