BETHLEHEM, PA — As temperatures soar in eastern PA during the first heat wave of 2024, many local municipalities have distributed valuable information and resources to communities to keep everyone safe and hydrated.
The City of Allentown has provided numerous updates on where citizens can find shelter from the heat and even waived pool fees for three local pools for all residents from June 18th to the 21st.
While The City of Bethlehem has yet to distribute any alerts or resource guides, many citizens wonder what the best ways to cool down are for Bethlehem residents.
No official areas or buildings have been deemed safe havens in Bethlehem. However, we put together just a few free & convenient places to cool down if you seek relief.
Yosko Park Splash Pad
In addition to the park, Yosko also has a swimming pool and a hybrid play area or “splash pad” where residents can cool off under the water features. While the pool requires a season pass to enter, the splash pad area is accessible to the public free of charge.
The splash pad’s water features activate closer to noon and are not on 24/7, so make sure to time your trip accordingly.
Wind Creek Shopping Outlets
During the week, the shopping outlets at the Wind Creek Casino on Southside are usually pretty quiet, especially if you arrive before the stores open. The AC is always pumping, and the food court is a great place to grab a quick bite, eat, and escape the heat.
The ground floor near the main entrance also has a few tables and chairs for decompressing if you need a short break from the elements.
Bethlehem Public Library
While not the most exciting venue in the city, the BAPL is a slow-paced and relaxing spot to hang out and read a book if you are passing by downtown or want to get out of the house while staying cool.
While you need a library card to take books home, the library welcomes everyone from the community. Stop by and pick up a magazine while you escape the sun, or bring your laptop to do some remote work.
The cool temp and relaxing environment are great for a sweltering PA summer day.
Avoid the outdoors, stay near air conditioning when possible, and drink plenty of fluids.
If you or someone close to you is suffering from heat-related or other emergencies, please call 9-1-1.
Stay safe, Bethlehemites!
