Lehigh Valley drivers can now order new Pennsylvania license plates
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Pennsylvania drivers can now order the commonwealth’s first new license plate design in over 20 years, featuring the iconic Liberty Bell and the phrase “Let Freedom Ring.”
The patriotic design represents Pennsylvania’s historic role in the nation’s founding, with the Liberty Bell as an enduring symbol of American independence.
The redesigned plates are part of Governor Josh Shapiro’s statewide tourism initiative and commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The design marks the first major update to Pennsylvania’s standard license plate since the early 2000s.

To qualify for a replacement plate, drivers must meet one of several criteria:
- The current plate is illegible or damaged
- Transferring registration to a new vehicle
- Requesting the new Liberty Bell design to replace an existing standard plate
The application process requires filling out Form MV-44 and mailing it with the required fee to:

Applicants should include a photo of their current plate with the application for personalized plates.
To ensure you receive the new design, be sure to order your plate directly through PennDOT. Plates issued by third-party or non-Commonwealth vendors may still feature the old design due to existing inventory.
Drivers with specialty plates, such as military or organizational plates, should note that switching to the new standard Liberty Bell design will replace their specialty plate entirely.
PennDOT has started taking orders to replace license plates for $13, and instructions to order a license plate in the new design are available from PennDOT online. You can also request a personalized plate in the new design.
The new plates are rolling out alongside updated “Welcome to Pennsylvania” highway signs that feature similar Liberty Bell imagery and red, white, and blue color schemes as part of the state’s broader tourism and branding initiative.
For more information about ordering the new Liberty Bell license plates, visit PennDOT’s website or contact your local driver’s license center.
