ALLENTOWN, PA — The City of Allentown hosted its second annual Back-to-School Bash on August 13th at Cedar Beach Park in partnership with the Allentown School District, Chamber of Commerce, and Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.
The event provided residents of Allentown with free access to school supplies, backpacks, games, music, haircuts, and swimming.
Several local organizations, including the Student Transportation of America, Girls on the Run, and Allentown Public Library, were present to provide information and guidance for students and families.
Melissa Reese, communications manager for the Allentown School District and member of the Back-to-School Bash planning committee, said this event aims to encourage students for the upcoming academic year.
“We are really focused on making sure that students are ready to start the school year strong,” said Reese.
“We have over 65 community partners and vendors that are available to provide resources for families.”
Providers from St. Luke’s University Health Network and Lehigh Valley Health Network were on site to provide residents with free access to several services, including free physicals and free vouchers for eye exams.
Reese said such events create a sense of community among residents and provide encouraging and uplifting energy for students and their families.
“I think it really brings everyone together,” said Reese.
“All of our principals and our school leaders are volunteering throughout the day so it gives them a great opportunity to connect with students and families and just make sure that everybody’s ready to go back to school.”
Cedar Beach Park was packed with families as kids rushed to participate in activities, swim at Cedar Beach pool for free for the day, and prepare to jump into the school spirit.
Kids enjoyed a variety of activities, including face painting, competitions, sports, inflatable bounce houses, and balls.
Mayor Matthew Tuerk was also on-site to engage with students and support the community.
There were several student-led performances from different schools in the Allentown School District, including dance, musical bands and songs.
The event was funded through donations and contributions from local companies and organizations to give back to the community.
Families expressed gratitude as they got to say goodbye to summer and welcome the academic year with their community.
