BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh University has received a record 20,441 applications for its incoming Class of 2030, the highest total in the university’s history, officials announced this week.

The mark surpasses the previous record, set in 2024, by 45 applications and represents a 5.7% increase over last year’s applicant pool. The university’s applicant pool has grown 65% since 2020, when Lehigh received 12,387 applications. The total means more than 13 students applied for each available spot in the fall class.

The milestone comes as colleges nationwide confront the so-called “demographic cliff” — a prolonged decline in the number of college-age Americans triggered by falling birth rates after the 2008 recession. Pennsylvania is expected to be among the hardest-hit states, with projections showing a 17% drop in high school graduates by 2041.

“This new record high is especially notable because it comes in the first year of the ‘demographic cliff,’” said Dan Warner, vice provost for admissions and financial aid. “It is very gratifying that while there are fewer students of age to apply to colleges, more of them are choosing to apply to Lehigh.”

The shrinking pipeline has split higher education into clear winners and losers. Well-known selective schools like Lehigh, Villanova and Colgate have continued to set application records, while smaller and regional institutions are fighting for survival.

Penn State plans to shutter seven of its 20 branch campuses after spring 2027 due to declining enrollment, and more than 120 U.S. colleges have closed or merged since 2016.

The divide is visible even within the Lehigh Valley. Muhlenberg College in Allentown, which has seen enrollment declines, has launched six new master’s programs since 2020 and eliminated its application fee this cycle to attract more applicants.

Warner attributed Lehigh’s surge to several factors, including the university’s elevation to R1 research status, recognition from the United Nations through ECOSOC designation and strong postgraduate placement results.

“This is a time of great momentum for Lehigh,” Warner said.

Lehigh also set a record for local interest, receiving 598 applications from Lehigh Valley high school students, a 12.4% increase over last year’s previous high of 532. In fall 2025, the university enrolled 101 first-year students from Northampton and Lehigh County high schools, the largest local contingent in nearly a decade.

Admissions decisions are expected in late March.
