SLATINGTON, Pa. — A two-alarm fire that broke out in a set of garages Monday displaced 10 people and forced the temporary closure of a nearby restaurant, according to fire officials.

Crews were called around 10:10 a.m. to the 600 block of Main Street in Slatington for a report of a structure fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Jason Nicholas said firefighters arrived to find a garage fire that quickly spread and destroyed three garages. No injuries were reported.

Nicholas said it took about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The department called for additional help due to high temperatures and challenges getting volunteers during daytime hours.

Six residents from an adjacent apartment building and four more from a nearby structure were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting all 10.

China Inn, a neighboring Chinese restaurant was also evacuated and temporarily closed while responders battled the fire. The building was not damaged, but power had to be shut off during the response.

The Slatington Fire Department did not respond to requests for further information. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
